Induction
The Induction is a ceremonial declaration of membership which formally signifies commitment to and through God made in the presence and with the support of the AtSCA community. It is an affirmation of a prior orientation to the ideals of authentic Filipino Christianity: love of God and neighbor through a deep and meaningful prayer life, service for others, and a responsive pursuit of truth in societal realities. It is also a promise to a future orientation: commitment to come to an even closer relationship with God, to continue responsively discerning His will and to pursue always a greater service for others.

Good evening, beloved AtSCAns!

Tomorrow, we will officially open AtSCA week with a community Mass. SCA's from other schools and some friends from the area are going to celebrate It with us. Since most of our AtSCA shirts are probably still being washed (because of the Sumilao mass), any attire appropriate for the occasion will do. Also, it's highly encouraged that we invite our families. As the old saying goes, "the family that prays together, stays together."

There's more! Because one of the AtSCA Week heads just can't seem to grow up and get-over the Hogwarts craze (guess which one!), he decided to make the cell-point system. It's almost like the one in the book only much better because YOU (yes, YOU!!!!) get to earn points for your cell. And this system shall start tomorrow. HOW??? attendance, of course! this includes you, the family members, our friends of the area. The more people there are, the more points you accumulate for your cell. Just make sure they'll register. There will be a registration booth near the chapel.

There are more opportunities for you to get points for your cell. To know more about this, always participate in AtSCA week activities:

Not included above are the activities for the Tambay week, which means, you need to tambay more often to know what surprises await you. I can only assure you that there are a lot! Also, tickets for AtSCA night are already available. Just Tambay in the AtSCA room to buy yours. Alumni are also invited.

Bantay Pangako Candidate's Forum

My Dearest AtSCAns,

Last Sunday we helped bring the Barangay Elections back to the people by facilitating a Bantay Pangako Agenda-Setting Session for 9 local communities.

As a follow up to that, we are now inviting the candidates for barangay kaptain in Barangay Pansol and Barangay Loyola Heights to take a look at the Agenda and agree to study and implement these priority projects that came from the people themselves. SLB will not be here since they will be having their planning session in Tagaytay, Ateneo School of Government will also be absent because they have a workshop to give.

Because of that I'd like to ask for your support and attendance! So far it will only be me as the main organizer, and 2 people from miriam and hopefully some OSCI people.

Let me re-introduce myself. I am Mel Sta.Maria. I am just a lowly
professor of law at an obscure law school in Rockwell Makati where
about eight (8) Atscan alumni and alumnae are studying. I am also
a lawyer. I guess I am more known to you all as the father of
Patty, one of your newest members who kept on reminding me not to
forget this day as if this day will be your "life-defining" AtSCAN
moment. Well, this definitely will not be that "life defining" AtSCAN
moment, but I hope the words you hear today will guide you towards
that direction. I graduated from this great Jesuit
institution not as summa cum laude, magna cum laude, cum laude, or
with honors, or even an officer of any organization, but just
merely an ordinary biology student who was SIMPLY AN AtSCAN.

"SIMPLY AN ATSCAN." This phrase meant so much to us then
during our time as AtSCANs here. Our moderator, Fr. Francis Reilly
of the Society of Jesus, always reminded us of the virtue of
SIMPLICITY. SO , today I have decided to talk about SIMPLICITY and
not those complicated super-deep socio-theological issues about the
structure of society and what-nut. Fr. Reilly always said that
if we are simple in our ways , we will better appreciate and
understand the basic facts and demands of life, which, in turn,
will carry us through in the Ateneo, in our apostolate, and in our
lives as a whole.

By practicing the virtue of simplicity, I do not mean that
we all become simpletons or retardeds or oppressed or that we always
wear old clothes or shoes or socks with holes. It is not that. It
is not even more than that. It is profoundly BEYOND THOSE THINGS.
So, what then were the attributes of our simple-mindedness as
AtSCANs then, which, if observed, I think will serve you well even
today.

First, we strived to have that basic attitude of going into
ACTION for the good of others. Imbued with this desire, we felt,
humbly, that nothing can go wrong. If you put good into action,
then, in the end, no matter what you do, WALA TALAGANG SAYANG as
Ediboy Calasanz used to say to us then. One does not have to do
something dramatic , earthshaking or trailblazing. The weekly
apostolate in your respective centers every Saturday anticipated by
the children whom you have learned to love, the stroke of the chalk
to teach children that 2+2 is not five, the singing and the
dancing you do that makes the children laugh, the heartfelt warm
embrace you give to children that likewise gives joy and comfort to
their parents, these are all good and well. Keep on doing them.
This is the significance of the word "ACTION" in ATSCA. It is a
commitment in the flesh. ISANG MASIGASIG NA PAGTATATYA. As the song
goes "ISANG PAKIKIBAKANG HINDI NAGAALINTANA NG MGA HIRAP NA
DINARANAS." Your actions will give JOY to others. You are JOY-
CARRIERS.

Second, we recognized that we lived in a community.
Ateneans, after all, should be "persons for others." This is the
import of the word "Ateneo" in AtSCA. Ateneo is a Jesuit institution
and we know that one of the attributes of Jesuit training is not to
be isolated from the world, but doing good things with the world- a
sense of SOCIAL AWARENESS, a special sensitivity to the plight and
the situation of people around you, especially in your centers.
Looking at it from a different perspective, social awareness is the
ability to witness and to be witnessed. BUT it is not only YOU
becoming witnesses to what the world brings, but the world
witnessing what YOU bring to the world. Somehow you must have
some witnesses of what you have done, even without intending to be
witnessed. I do not suggest that you preen yourselves and brag
about what you do SO that others will see. That's not the point.
The objective is to simply and unassumingly be committed and do
what has to be done for the good of others: ISANG PAGBUBUKAS
PALAD. And if people see this, let them be "infected" by your
commitment. Let it be like a virus, but a good contagious virus
propelling people who witnessed you to emulate your commitment.
You can start this "infection" with your own special companionship
in ATSCA and in your centers. Cherish one another, as Ateneans, as
companions, because each one of you is a witness to the other's
good deeds.

Third , conscious of our own inadequacy, we strived to
passionately YEARN TO LEARN as Fr. Reilly appropriately said. Your
present station in life today is that YOU ARE STUDENTS in this
Jesuit institution. Do not forget that. Learn as much as you can.
Make yourselves better and better each year. What you sow now will
greatly help you in the future. Always strive for the best. To be
good , to be studious and to pass your subjects excellently do
not negate the spirit of simplicity but rather gives it
justification. This is the significance of the word "STUDENT" in
ATSCA. As students , NOT ONLY should you do good to others, BUT you
also have to do good to yourselves. You must always do your best and
try your hardest. You may fall short every now and then, but that's
OK. Remember: WALANG SAYANG.

LAST but the most important of all, AND FORGIVE ME IF I
SOUND LIKE A PRIEST NOW, we always strived to nurture that basic
childlike faith believing with all our hearts and minds that, in the
EUCHARIST, JESUS again reincarnates HIMSELF in TIME AND SPACE ,
yes, in history, to physically enter our body and soul. THIS IS THE
CENTERPOINT- Si "HESUS NA AKING KAPATID; to faithfully believe that
at the moment of communion, we become incorruptible as the HOPE of
the resurrection is physically within us. From this CENTER OF HOPE
radiates everything. This HOPE gives us inner power and inspiration
in our tasks as AtSCANs to "infect" others. This is the essence
of the word "CATHOLIC" in ATSCA: To be physically and spiritually
with Jesus and to MANIFEST Jesus to others. Truly, this
consciousness of HIS presence makes AtSCA and your activities an
APOSTOLATE.

Without Jesus, who is the HOPE OF THE RESURRECTION, in your work,
and in your studies and, indeed, in your midst, your efforts will
just be as dry and hopeless. It will be meaningless. Looking forward
to the room prepared by HIM in heaven will be a mere figment of
your imagination. ITUON NATIN ANG ATING PANINGIN KAY JESUS NA SIYANG
PINAGMULAN NG ATING PANANAMPALATAYA, AT SIYA RING NAGPAPASAKDAL NITO
( Hebreo 12:2). " Let us fix our gaze on Jesus, the author and
perfecter of our faith." I remember this line in the Gospel very
well. This is the reason why, during consecration, I and my cellmates
in AtSCA then , gazed at the bread and wine.We believed that we were
gazing at Jesus at that moment when Fr. Reilly performed the greatest
miracle in the world. I still believe it today. It is such a loving,
awesome, powerful, and mystical moment. In philosophy of religion,
we say "mysterium tremendum"

And, of course there might be some of you who are not Catholics, but
its ok, if you are not Catholic, nurturing that faith in Jesus can
likewise be achieved by being cognizant that GOD is with you
spiritually. EMMANUEL- GOD with us.

With all these in mind when we were here as ATSCANs, we went
through our centers and attended our prayer meetings every week with
a meaningful commitment which was Christ-centered. We attended the
ATSCA MASS. During our time, it was the Wednesday 12:15 noon MASS.
To prepare for this talk, I visited the multiply site of Gerard to
see how AtSCANs might look like today. And you know, you just looked
like us during our time. And as I watched the video of Richie in
his multiply site showing members of Cell Marytown singing "You are
Mine" in their prayer meeting, I felt nostalgic and, on a personal
note, it brought me joy because I saw my daughter as one among you.
I watched the short video and it reminded me of that kind of profound
simplicity I am talking about. There is no fanfare, but only an
unassuming meaningful togetherness WITH CHRIST: praying, witnessing
and joyfully sharing among cellmates , silently knowing that each
AtSCAN in that prayer meeting is a committed student doing what is
good for the glory of Jesus in the community. What A UNIQUE KIND OF
LOVING COMPANIONSHIP. "Where one or two of you gather together in MY
name , there AM I in your midst." That is not merely a promise from
Jesus. It is his assurance and divine commitment.

So SIMPLICITY, stay simple AtSCANs. We tried to live out
those attributes and even today, many of us are still living them.
Don't get me wrong; we are not saints or holy men and women or
brilliant people. We just simply try our hardest to live our present
station in life and make Christ our CENTERPOINT.

In the end, AtSCA is not only a unique kind of joyful
companionship among Ateneans but it is also a great opportunity to
live a simple Christ-centered life and to make the love of Christ
radiate in your studies, in your family, in your centers and in the
community. And if AtSCA is a loving and radiating companionship,
then take hold of it and live it and let it not get away while you
are at the Ateneo.

Thank you. Thank you very much Speaker De Venecia, Senate President Villar, other newly elected leaders of both Houses, congratulations to you, Senators and Congressmen and Congresswomen. Vice-President De Castro, former President Ramos, Chief Justice Puno, our host Mayor, Mayor Sonny Belmonte, other government officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps, ladies and gentlemen.

We meet here today to inaugurate a new Congress after a fresh election. I congratulate every elected official, from municipal to provincial to Congress on hard fought and successful campaigns.

Tapos na ang halalan at pamumulitika; panahon na para maglingkod nang walang damot, mamuno nang walang pangamba maliban sa kagalingan ng bayan, and to govern with wisdom, compassion, vision and patriotism.

Hangarin kong mapabilang ang Pilipinas sa mayayamang bansa sa loob ng dalawampung taon. By then poverty shall have been marginalized; and the marginalized raised to a
robust middle class.

We will have achieved the hallmarks of a modern society, where institutions are strong.
By 2010, the Philippines should be well on its way to achieving that vision.

With the tax reforms of the last Congress, and I thanked the last Congress, we have turned around our macroeconomic condition through fiscal discipline, toward a balanced budget. Binabayaran ang utang, pababa ang interes, at paakyat ang pondo para sa progreso ng sambayanang Pilipino!!!

Hey guys! How’s your summer break? Have you been enjoying it so far? Well, since I had “free time”, I decided to create a new design for the AtSCA shirt. That’s a picture of 5 people:

Area Profiles

Marytown

The name Marytown got its name from the area visits during the 1970s of two sisters from Maryknoll (which is Miriam College at the present). The area became part of their apostolate and they named it after the Virgen Mary.

Marytown is located at Esteban Abada St., Brgy. Loyola Heights, Quezon City. It is accessible either through an alley in Esteban Abada Street or through another alley near the overpass fronting Miriam College. It has an area of 1 hectare and 40 sqm. It is a park therefore a government property with a parcel of land donated by the Castro Family (privately owned) or the Tuazon family.
The overall environment of Marytown is not that well. Even if residents here are thrifty, it cannot be avoided to produce litter in the alley and in the water way. Maybe this could be linked with the lack of sanitary infrastructures in Marytown. There are still households who do not have their own toilet bowls nor bathing area in their houses. It is only outside of their houses
where some residents wash their clothes and take a bath. Garbage is also thrown in the water way, where most diseases like hardly treatable wounds and galis would come from. All these could be linked with the lack of sanitary and hygienic information among the residents.

It became an apostolate area of AtSCA about 28 years ago. In fact, Marytown is the oldest apostolate area of AtSCA. Few of the projects contributed by AtSCA to the area include Linis Sapa, KADIPA or prayer session with the youths, erection of a small library, weekly tutorials, and weekly visits to the families or ”babad”.

K1b4

K1b4 is part of Barangay Pansol. Barangay Pansol used to be a part of Sitio Balara (barrio of Marikina, Rizal). It became part of quezon City in 1939 when President Manuel L. Quezon signed into law Commonwealth Act No. 502 on October 12, 2939 creating Quezon City.

K1b4 became an apostolate area of AtSCA in the School Year of 1993-1994, formerly known as Cell 6.

Kaingin Uno Block 4 (K1b4) is part of Kaingin Uno. Kaingin Uno fills up a 18.2 hectare area. K1b4 is a hilly place located near NAWASA or Balara Filtering Station which also provides many of the jobs in the area. It is sandwiched in between 2 high-end communities namely the Ayala and La Vista Residences. The street is wide enough to allow one car to pass through. The houses in K1b4 are connected to a main street.
The location of k1b4, lower part of the Kaingin hill, makes it more prone to floods especially during typhoons since water coming from the communities in the higher part such as k1b6 flows downward k1b4.

K1b6

K1B6 is actually an arbitrary name assigned by AtSCA (although recognized by a few residents there), for the Block 6 of Kaingin-1, Barangay Pansol, Balara, Quezon City. It was called as such to differentiate it from another area by AtSCA which is Block 4 of Kaingin-1. Because of the impending relocation plan to one of the areas of AtSCA which is Rona’s Garden during the year 1996, AtSCA entered the area of Kaingin-1 Block 6 and dubbed it “K1B6.”
The hilly place of Kaingin is purported to be once a forested area, before some people went there and performed “kaingin” or slash-and-burn to turn it into an urban settlement that has long been there for at least four generations. Being a once forested land, it enjoyed legal rights as a highly-disputed and controversial government property. It used to be a part of sitio Balara (barrio of Marikina, Rizal). In 1939, it became part of Quezon City when President Manuel L. Quezon signed into law Commonwealth Act no. 502 on October 12, 2939 creating Quezon City, with some of the territories including Kaingin-1 to be included in this new city.
This made the area lucrative to private individuals, developers, and capitalists as it had the potential to be a residential area or even a golf course. K1B6 in particular, is sandwiched by the Ayala Village and a huge private estate by Soliven. Before, most residents of Kaingin-1 resided in the lower part of the hills, assigning geosocial boundaries known as Blocks. Kaingin-1 even included areas at the back of the hill and is difficult to be accessed – Ipit-ipit and Bagong Sibol. But the permanent blockage and closure of the entrance-exit in Bagong Sibol brought about by the purported action of the Ayala Corporation made the people use the entrance-exit in the Block 4 region. Due to frequent passage towards the sole entrance-exit, houses have been built in the highest part of Kaingin-1 hill, and this highest region is now commonly known as Block 6. Some time ago, the area is under threat by an expansion of the private fence of Soliven property, probable construction of large pipes of Manila Water, and possible construction of C-5 highway.
The growing number of families and the inclusion of the educated (tertiary level) citizenry into the population of the area brought about a strong population that is enlightened on the legalities of their residency, and the subtle oppressions that seemed to have endangered even their lives. The area was once featured in the news when SWAT was stationed in the boundaries of K1B6 and the Soliven property, amidst unrest and political activism of the residents at that time when Soliven was trying to expand territory by building a new wall overnight to creep into uncharted public territory. With the support of barangay, an organization called UMASA KA was instituted to try to push the papers of land ownership into Congress and judiciary. With many hearsays and stories about the controversies concerning the incapacitated UMASA KA, another organization was instituted by residents with keen political insight and basic legal know-how. This organization is called KASAMA KA. Political organization of the urban poor residents of Kaingin-1 resulted into near-awarding of the land title, and continued to be the reason why they cannot just easily be relocated or their houses be demolished, as well as the granting of more basic necessities such as electricity and water. An air mixed with both insecurity and complacency abounds the residents – some don’t have electricity and pipe for water while others have, and as manifested by a variety of houses – some of which are shanties, while others are made of concrete.

Park 7

In 1975, only seven families occupied the vacant area. Passersby would think that the strip of land was not occupied, as many ipil-ipil and banana trees were planted there. As time passed, houses replaced the trees. By 1983, the number of families living in Park 7 mushroomed to 37. The residents came to recognize that they were a part of the STA. MARIA DELLA STRADA parish. A small organization was formed, aiming to preserve the solidarity and peace, and to care for one another. This organization also looked for ways so Park 7 would be recognized as a community. Through the local government and several NGOs, they became aware of the rights and benefits they were entitled to. In 1984, Fr. PAT LIM approved the inclusion of Park 7 as the 14th participant in the SMDS PARISHIONER COMMUNITY.

By 1997, 170 families were already living in the area. The SAMAHAN NG MGA MAMAMAYAN NG PARK7 (SMP) was established and registered in the SECURITY AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION.

SMP first elevated the status of their housing, which was grounded on the belief that no Filipino is a squatter in his own country. They began asking for help from barangay and Quezon City leaders so that their houses would be considered as part of the HOUSING PROJECT. Unfortunately, their request remains unapproved.

In a nutshell, most Park 7 members own and manage small sari-sari stores / carenderia. The men are usually construction workers, or tricycle, and family drivers. Therefore, the average salary is barely enough for their daily needs, and thus, some mothers and housewives are forced to double as housemaids, laundry women, dressmakers, and such to supplement the family income. Some have jobs at the Ateneo as janitors, photocopying machine operators, or maintenance workers.

-it means each member is constantly growing
-growth is always a dialectic, a two way process for the formator and member

-means we are not limited to the formation of our members, but rather it is through that formation that we are able to give back to others

- indirectly this applies to our fellowmen

-values of being a Filipino
-“bayanihan” = bayani + anihan

4. To provide avenues for AtSCANs and the Ateneo community to be aware of and to respond conscientiously to social, economic and political issues

5. To provide opportunities for members to integrate and imbibe the three areas of formation towards their development as Filipino Christian leaders

6. To ignite and strengthen each member’s passion for the AtSCA ideals.
